From Pixels to Findings: How Image Analytics Changes What Satellite Imagery Can Tell You

Satellite imagery has always shown you what’s in a scene. Every dot, every wake, every hull is a detection. What it hasn’t done, until now, is tell you who that detection is, and whether you should care.

That’s the gap Windward’s new Image Analytics closes. It’s made up of two capabilities released together: Vessel Correlation, which resolves every detection in an image to a vessel identity, and MAI Expert™, which turns that correlation data into an instant, natural-language read of the whole scene.

Together, they move satellite imagery from a picture you have to interpret to a finding you can act on.

The Problem with Imagery Today

Object detection tells you a vessel was present. It doesn’t tell you which one, whether it was supposed to be there, or whether it was hiding. Answering those questions means pulling AIS data separately, laying it over the image, and manually working out which signal belonged to which object in the picture. That’s slow, it doesn’t scale to a scene with hundreds of detections, and it depends entirely on the analyst getting the match right.

That approach — displaying AIS alongside an image, known as overlay — puts two datasets side by side and leaves the interpretation to the person looking at the screen. It’s useful, but it doesn’t qualify as intelligence. It’s just a layer.

What Correlation Does

Vessel Correlation is a different operation entirely. Instead of displaying AIS next to an image, Windward takes each specific physical detection — a bounding box around an object in the scene — and runs it through our proprietary fusion engine to resolve it to a specific vessel identity. That resolution is built on fused blips: AIS data combined with behavioral data and Windward’s own correlation algorithm, not a simple proximity match between two independent datasets.

The output shows up directly on the image. Every detected object gets a colored box: green if it’s transmitting, purple if it’s dark. For transmitting detections, correlation resolves to one of two outcomes:

1. A confident match displays the full vessel card, including name, flag, vessel type, IMO, and MMSI. When confidence is high but not definitive, users see a ranked list of multiple candidates.
2. Detections with no AIS signal to correlate against are flagged as dark vessels. That flag becomes the starting point for an investigation: analysts can pivot to the vessel’s projected path or task follow-on collection to reacquire it.

The distinction matters because it’s the difference between a system that shows you data and a system that does the interpretation for you. A finding attached to a detection is something you can act on immediately. A layer on a map is something you still have to work through.

Detection to Action with  MAI Expert™

Correlation solves the per-detection problem. But a scene with a handful of vessels is easy to read object by object. A scene with hundreds isn’t. That’s what MAI Expert™ is for.

MAI Expert™ generates a natural-language summary directly from the correlation results, including total detections, the percentage identified, a one-line assessment of the scene, and structured breakdowns by transmission and identity status, vessel size, class, risk, and flag.

Every value in the summary is interactive. Select “dark tankers,” for example, and the image instantly filters to only those detections.

Export the complete report with the annotated image as a PDF, or download individual sections as PNGs for briefings, reports, or case files.

The result is that an analyst doesn’t have to read a dense scene one detection at a time to know what it means. They get the assessment first, and a direct path from that assessment to the specific slice of the image they need.
